thin rocky soils, steep slopes and rugged terrain make farming
Saffron Vineyard a challenge. Grower Lisa Chu terraced these vines
into the slope at the top of her vineyard which rises above the fog
line at over 1,800 feet. Here nights are warmer and days cooler
than the valley floor which promotes ripening at lower sugar
accumulation. The vines grow slowly and produce small berries for
extremely low yields. The reward is wines that are intense and
chewy, with magnificent spice, rich, earthy tannins and bold, dark
the 2009 superhero was Mother Nature. Few frosty spring mornings
and late spring rains, along with a warm June, helped regulate vine
growth and vigor. We only encountered five days over 100 degrees
Fahrenheit during the growing season, thus avoiding raisins and
sunburn. Yields were slightly lower than normal, and smaller
berries added color intensity and concentration.
